Sketches from Winyards Nick, Peak District

A couple of quick watercolour sketches from a misty June walk in the Peak District, taking in the views from Winyards Nick below Over Owler Tor.

Storm approaching Longshaw, sketchbook

Peak District rain storm landscape, watercolour sketch by Sian Vernon

I was about to get out and go for a walk at Longshaw but I thought better of it. Ten minutes later there was a very wintery shower over this area of the Peak District! Difficult to sketch or describe or photograph what I saw, but the approaching rain was masking out parts of the distant hills. It was so beautiful. I really haven’t done it any justice, but I’ll try to do a proper painting at some point.

Secret Garden and Mother Cap sketches

The Secret Garden (Hathersage) Peak District, art by Sian Vernon

This is a part of Hathersage Moor called the Secret Garden, which is well known to climbers but I’ve never walked through it before.  Lots of boulders, birch trees and blue skies.

Two or three seasons in one day

Moorland birch trees gouache sketch by Sian Hughes

Just a couple of quick gouache sketches that were inspired by a weather-filled walk on Hathersage Moor this winter. The wind was wild, moving the swirly-whirly clouds along so quickly and allowing the sun to peek out and do its reflection-y thing again here and there, it was wonderful. I didn’t get rained on either, which was a bonus.

Urban Sketching, Sheffield

Park Hill and Electric Works

It was a surprisingly balmy October day, urban sketching in Sheffield with the talented folk of Urban Sketchers Yorkshire, taking in the sights of Sheffield.

In my sketchbook: Sheffield Town Hall, Sheffield Winter Garden (this was also my Inktober offering of the day, more on that later), The Globe Inn on Howard Street and a quick attempt at a horribly complicated panoramic view of Park Hill/Electric Works/Midland Station from Sheffield Hallam University stairwell.

Portland Works Sketches

Portland Works Sketch

These sketches are from when I went out with  Urban Sketchers Yorkshire in June (Yes, it’s August now, I know. I’m not the most efficient person in the world, but I seriously don’t know how anybody gets anything done with a baby around).

Portland Works is a lovely grungy Grade II Listed former cutlery factory in Sheffield UK. This is where the very first stainless steel cutlery was manufactured, or so we were told!

Inspired by all the amazing work by the other sketchers, I went back a few days later and drew a view of Portland Works from the back.

I did this one of a nearby works a few days later too: Denby Street, Sheffield - sketch by Sian Hughes urban sketcher

Fun!
