I could watch the clouds rolling in over Higger Tor and Carl Wark all day. These two hills with their rocky outcrops of Millstone Grit are popular features of Hathersage Moor in the Peak District, UK. Carl Wark is also an Iron Age fort for those of you interested in that kind of thing. This digitalContinue reading “Hathersage Moor from Longshaw”
My sketches from a day out / sketchcrawl with Urban Sketchers Yorkshire 21st Oct 2017. The Holt, Rutland Arms pub and Showroom Bar, Sheffield.
I took a bag full of sketchbooks with me on our recent visit to the East Coast of Yorkshire, but it turns out it’s quite difficult to sketch when you’ve got a toddler. I’m sure it’s not impossible and there were moments I could have got a sketchbook out but I always feel too badContinue reading “Sketches from East Yorkshire in September”
Dark clouds and summer rain storm over a Peak District moorland landscape. A red grouse has just been disturbed from its resting place and pops up from the heather with a loud flap-flap-flap of its wings and an unmistakable whirring croak “goback-goback-goback”.
We’ve had some pretty damp, foggy days this summer in the UK. The Peak District has been particularly bleak but wild, atmospheric and beautiful. This new painting is inspired by the mist and cotton grass on Hathersage Moor this June. Available as an A4 print and A6 greeting card in my Folksy Shop.

A couple of quick watercolour sketches from a misty June walk in the Peak District, taking in the views from Winyards Nick below Over Owler Tor. View towards High Lees, Hathersage. You can just about make out Scraperlow Hall amongst the trees and Derwent Moors fading into the distance. View towards Mitchell Field. Note: IContinue reading “Sketches from Winyards Nick, Peak District”
I was about to get out and go for a walk at Longshaw but I thought better of it. Ten minutes later there was a very wintery shower over this area of the Peak District! Difficult to sketch or describe or photograph what I saw, but the approaching rain was masking out parts of theContinue reading “Storm approaching Longshaw, sketchbook”
November was perfectly November-ish today (“No sun – no moon! No morn – no noon”, etc. – Thomas Hood). Wonderful greys and yellows and hazy outlines though. These three new original A6 paintings inspired by November Skies are now listed in my Folksy shop
