Tree Magic

I have been drawing a lot of trees lately, inspired by the woods and trees near where I live. I’m working on few things which I’m hoping to enter into Art in the Gardens in Sheffield later in the year. I’m also in the middle of various commissions and potty training my 2 year old. One of these things is going much less successfully than the others. If anyone has a simple formula for potty training, that would be appreciated too.

Hathersage Moor from Longshaw

HathersageMoorLongshaw_CR

I could watch the clouds rolling in over Higger Tor and Carl Wark all day. These two hills with their rocky outcrops of Millstone Grit are popular features of Hathersage Moor in the Peak District, UK. Carl Wark is also an Iron Age fort for those of you interested in that kind of thing. This digital painting is how they look from the National Trust Longshaw Estate in Derbyshire.

This contemporary Derbyshire landscape art is available to buy as an A4 print

Sketches from East Yorkshire in September

I took a bag full of sketchbooks with me on our recent visit to the East Coast of Yorkshire, but it turns out it’s quite difficult to sketch when you’ve got a toddler. I’m sure it’s not impossible and there were moments I could have got a sketchbook out but I always feel too bad for taking my attention away from the little guy. I’m okay with that, he’s pretty fun to spend time with and I’ll get back to sketching eventually!

I did make a couple of sketches (from my head) of weather-based moments I’d been inspired by when we got back:

  1. Some hazy fields in the rain somewhere near Driffield in the Yorkshire Wolds.
  2. Sunlight breaking through the storm clouds at Danes Dyke, near Flamborough

I also did quite a few cow sketches from life (out of the cottage window). All drawings were created using the Procreate app on iPad and enhanced in PS Express. For those of you interested in cows, I believe they were Simmentals. They were very beautiful, and very inquisitive!

Summer rain and red grouse

Summer rain and red grouse - original digital landscape painting by Sheffield artist Sian Vernon

Dark clouds and summer rain storm over a Peak District moorland landscape. A red grouse has just been disturbed from its resting place and pops up from the heather with a loud flap-flap-flap of its wings and an unmistakable whirring croak “goback-goback-goback”.

Original digital painting by Sian Vernon.

I’m having fun making these ‘paintings’ with the iPad. I used to paint a lot with acrylic but I just don’t have the space or time to do it at the moment, so this is really allowing me to play and produce something with a similar looking end-result. I hope you enjoy seeing them.
